Deep

El Yunque National Park

Deep

How breach the invitation
Of the blackgreen dark?
How stay the shade around me?
Green-gold light above,
Surf-green blue below,
Viridian that wraps me like a gift.
I dive between the leaves,
Swim along the trees, agile as a fish.
My ultimate desire, my most fervent wish:
Deep. Green.

  1. I love holding a green leaf in my hand and using my eye to pull the multitude of greens from it. Deep green needs be asked kindly to be allowed to swim upon it.

  2. So sensual! Reminds me of exploring the deep green of the southern Appalachians, especially during or right after a rain shower.

  3. I used to live in Puerto Rico, and have visited El Yunque a number of times. Enjoyed this lush poem--much like the rain forest.

  6. Karen, wish we could all do that: go for a float through the leaves halfway up the trees.
    Refreshing.

  7. Karen, grew up in the country, and I remember that moment as the rain subsided to a dripping and we'd run out. Everything was greener, the light played tricks, and the smell was that of heaven. Thank you for bringing this all together in a poem for us. I grew up in the Southern Tier of NYS, the upper Catskills, in a town called... Apalachin, not to be confused with the Appalachians. "Apple Achin'." Thanks so much for this. Amy

  8. Greenery is so pleasing to the eye. Having seen Autumn leaves wonder what it'll be like leaves in other colors! Great thoughts Karen!

    1. Thanks you. I love every season, but I'm partial to spring when all is pale green and deep summer, when the trees are full and almost overdone.

  11. Viridian (and most shades of green) are my favorite. Soothing, very soothing.
