SERENDIPITY
millions trailing comets
seeking soil
to plant their flags
you found me
Serendipity
twenty-three
and twenty-three
a diploid number
Serendipity
addition and division
replicate the entity
a new reality
you found me
Serendipity
accidentally stumbling upon something fortunate, especially while looking for something entirely unrelated
I was 22, and she was 20. Now, I'm 61, and she's still 58 for a few more months, but she will always be my own little nymphet.
ReplyDeleteSerendipity--one of the best words EVER.
ReplyDeleteI knew a couple who named their daughter Serendipity. Makes sense, especially in light of your poem!
I am glad I found you, interesting poem and poetry. Besides numbers word games are always my cup of tee. Interesting writtings here.
ReplyDeleteThe diploid finds the necessary energy to add and divide replicating itself again and again. If this could be accomplished in the more complex structure maybe then we would find the happy coincidence of peace while looking for trouble.
ReplyDeleteHi Karen,
ReplyDeleteA lesson in biology! The magic of life, must be serendipitous.
BTW, your link from RWP doesn't seem to work. I got here via your profile page.
Just simply beautiful, Karen! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteNice One Karen
ReplyDeleteSimply excellent. The chance of it all. I need to look up what a dipoloid number is now. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteInteresting poem. The numbers of life.
ReplyDeleteThis was enjoyable, and isn't most of life serendipity -- at least the really good stuff...

Stark and scientific, robotic and clinical but far from cold.Just right!
ReplyDeletehad to look up "diploid" :) - but love this - one of the most serendipitious and, i think, ironic things there is. i also love how you use "23", and "replicate the entity / a new reality" - we are not new, just new combinations - it feels playful, but really makes me think.
ReplyDeleteKaren,
ReplyDeleteI tried to leave a comment before but it didn't take. I love this! Very nice work.
Pamela
Snowbrush - how nice to know that she is still your nymphet! You did experience serendipity, didn't you?
ReplyDeleteShakespeare - I've always loved that word - from the first time I learned its meaning. It and the word "grace" are two of my favorites, probably because I know I didn't do anything to deserve either!
Mariana - I'm glad you've come by, too! I'm not much with numbers - words have always been my thing - but in this case, I know that one plus one makes three! ;-)
TWM - I'm smiling at your analogy, but you're right. As usual, Mark!
Derrick - Hello, and thanks for the comment and the note about the link. I fixed it, thank to you.
Marion - Thanks, dear.
Niamh B - Hello! You're here early! Don't tell TFE I jumped on the bus before it's even running. Oops! He's here...
Only Footprints - Welcome, and thanks. It's interesting to think of the things that stick in our minds...conjugations of verbs, diploid numbers, formulas we never use...
poemblaze - Welcome, and thanks.
Rob - ...and this is the good stuff! ;-) Thanks for coming by.
TFE - Eek! What're you doing here? You're not supposed to see this before MONDAY!! Oh, well, you know me - couldn't wait so I started running early. Anyway, thanks for your comment. Robotic? Hadn't thought of it that way!
joaquin - Your comments always make me think. This is one of the most ironic things, I think God's way of tricking us! Thanks for the comments.
Pamela - Thanks so much. I'll be by as soon as I can.
I had to go look up diploid too. Been a long time since I had my DNA education. You made me smile with this one. I love the word serendipity too.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I read your transcendent and lovely poem, and I start framing its continuation (in my mind). Serendipity Lost.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm ready for some serious sunshine already! Time to shake off the winter mildew and mold.
One of my fav. words and fav. movies. I read that in a survey it was on the top of the list of fav. words listed by people. :D
ReplyDeleteWe are all glad to have found your blog, for sure. :P
Sublime. Elegant.
ReplyDeleteI spend time in the "autopoiesis" literature...you might find it interesting.
Brilliant writing.
I don't think this was serendipitous at all.You
ReplyDeletehad your eye on that guy the whole tme.
wow, plain biological facts to make a great poem. that was a surprise :))
ReplyDeleteSzélsőFa
Chris - Remember the old song, "Don't know much about his-tor-y. Don't know much bi-ol-o-gy"? Rembember the ending? "But I do know that I love you..." well...makes a diploid number! That, I remembered! :-)
ReplyDeletejason - I prefer to stay in the moment and enjoy while I can. Hope you can, too.
Ani - I haven't seen the movie, but I've loved the word from the first time I heard it. We all love unexpected pleasures!
Cagey - Now I had to look up autopoeisis, which isn't at all what it sounds like but is a fascinating subject. Thanks for sending me there.
Rall- You betcha!;-)
SzelsoFa - Thanks, dear!
It made me think of cell division. As in foetus. I still don't know what's special about twenty-three, a diploid number. I'm slow. Can you tell me?
ReplyDeleteSure, our life here is serendipity. Loved your poem, Karen.
ReplyDeleteThis works like a chant or charm I think. Joyful.
ReplyDeletex
Serendipity: one of my favorite movies, too! ; )
ReplyDeleteWhen math and poetry combine, such power!
Irene - 23 is the haploid number, or number of chromosomes in a gamete; 46 is the diploid number (in other words, it takes two).
ReplyDeleteUma - It is, indeed! Thanks.
Rachel - Thanks. Hope you'll come back and read "Grace" - that's my main ticket this week.
Jeanne - Thank you!
It's like serendipity to read this poem! I love:
ReplyDelete"addition and division
replicate the entity
a new reality..."
Awesome poem, Karen!
Serendipity is my meditation word for 2010, I love these pieces. And thank you for your thoughtful comments on my blog, I was feeling out of the writing flow, and my last entry was from a two year old poem, and unrefined!
ReplyDeleteJules - Thanks, dear!
ReplyDeleteDianne - I think we have to keep writing even when we aren't feeling particularly inspired. I think it's serendipity that we've found friends to encourage us here. ;-)
