New Years Day

New Year's Day

No one else astir
this dark, cold morn --
just the stars and me.
The thin drift of grey
flung across the blueblack sky
gives me a sense that
everything's in motion.
I'm almost dizzy,
looking up at these familiar friends.
They're the most eternal things I know,
keepers of all history.
And I, their small and silent witness,
breathe a prayer of thanks
before returning
to the warmth and light
inside my little home.

  2. There's something so very precious about the stars and even more so on a new year's morning.

    Beautifully expressed, Karen.

Happy New year, dear Karen to you and all your family. May 2012 be a wonderful year for you all.

  4. Lovely! I haven't seen the stars in a late night or early morning sky in forever. But as I recall it's a really special feeling.

  6. Soft and gently it comes, the new year. This poem captures its movement so well, drifting in with a whisper, not blasting in with a bang.

  7. A very personal and relaxed way to ring in the year. Jealous of your ability to stargaze, though: too much light pollution round here. :)

  8. The large and the small, so beautifully entwined in your words...

    Happy New Year, Karen!

  9. Everyone - thank you for visiting and leaving a comment. I am soooo guilty of reading others' blogs and not taking the time to comment, often because I feel inarticulate ( "Wow!" being my most frequent thought) and often because I am pressed for time. No excuse, I know, so I thank you for taking the time. I know what it means to me, and I know I need to return the courtesy. New Year's resolution? Hmmm. That's an idea!

    Happy New Year, all!
