Poem

Poem

Full juicy,
prickly maybe,
or hard as sun-bleached bone.

Perfume in the dark.

Break one open
and, copiously, it weeps
enough to feed you.

Makes me think of Billy Collins for odd reasons.

I guess putting you in that company signals what I think of your work lately...

  2. Thank you, Christopher. They come few and far between these days.

Billy Collins is my hero! I'm sure he'd be appalled at the comparison! :-)

  3. :D I think you may be underestimating Mr. Collins' poetic generosity. Or overestimating his sense of rank. Or weighing the world's false high opinion as his own. Probably Billy is just another bozo on the bus, don't you think? With a set of challenges, among them being so well known and not sure why? And wondering if he wakes tomorrow if it will all still be there and should it? I do know for sure that celebrity is hugely overrated. That and a bad case of indigestion is still a bad case of indigestion.

In other words, I bet Billy would be pleased that your work is this good because he wants the company. Good poets aren't that common.

  6. Reminds me of a walk in the desert around here....this was full and descriptive in a small package that has punch. Loved it.

  9. Wow. This is beautiful. Oddly, my sister JUST called me to look on the porch, where she just hung one of these steer head skeletons. How strange is that? I love the Mary Oliver quote, she is my fave.

    1. Somehow, I'm not surprised that you love Mary Oliver! She is my poetry idol, too! Somehow, the steer skull incident is not accidental. Everything is connected, I think.

  14. So beautiful. I also think of ripe cactus, offering drink and sustenance to the hollow desert wanderer.
