I give the earth,
indescribable as it is,
soft words
to catch the hem
of these wide cotton skies.
What else have I to share?
I am small and simple
as the prayer I breathe;
Even the ivy sings more sweetly.
Little art I own
to claim my place
that I should walk rightly
in this vast and wondrous world.
My words, soft as air,
are the humble gifts I offer.
Poor widow's mite,
what else have I to share?
There are lots to share with others dear to one's heart! Wonderful write Karen!

Words! words! words yes, Hank, but it's simply words that carry a poet's heart.
DeleteLovely! Thanks for your kind words on my blog - and I would LOVE to make a prayer shawl for you, if you want :)
ReplyDeleteOh, Danabug! I wasn't 't fishing for a shawl, but if you are at a loss for what to do with your hands... :-)
DeleteA prayer shawl is a sort of prayer in itself, isn't it? I would LOVE to have one made by you for me.
Great contrast--- "I give the earth" and "poor widow's mite". Since the earth I am sure is quite expensive. Not that I've purchased one recently.
ReplyDeletei often think that we have much more to share and to give than we think... esp. in rough times we tend to think low of our gifts but just a smile can change the world for someone else...love the part with the hem of clouds esp.
ReplyDeleteThis is truly beautiful, Karen. It has an elegant humility. However, really, there is no more special gifts than words!
ReplyDelete'there ARE no more special gifts than word.'
Deletethe poor widows mite was all she had....and that was more than most would give...so i would say you gave quite much...smiles.
ReplyDeleteSweet!
ReplyDeleteSharing words are sharing little pebbles of our soul.. I think it could be the best we can offer.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful words, nothing light weighed about it ~ I think you sing more sweetly than ivy ~
ReplyDeletewonderful gifts to share with...
ReplyDeleteThe ability to share words is no small gift. It is a way to share ourselves.
ReplyDeletewords have the power to create the universe, and share a heart. Lovely poem.
ReplyDeletehow lovely an image -- the cottton skirts os sky--catching on your words like they might on trees, fountains, steps. You give words substance and space in an awesome world. Sounds like a lot to give.
ReplyDeleteWow, Karen, I resonate with every word of this beautiful poem. The wonder of earth's beauty, the humble heart.....this is really lovely. One of my faves!!!!! I, too, love the "hem of these wide cotton skies". Wowzers!
ReplyDeleteThis poem itself is a gift... just beautiful!!!!
ReplyDeletebeautiful manifestation of the love of nature
ReplyDeleteVery nice poem.
ReplyDelete"I am small and simple as the PRAYER I breathe..." What a lovely take on "air," and a humble poem, here. I was on Real Toads and found your comment. So glad to read you here! Amy
