Not a Poem

So, this is not a  poem, but when Dominic, Poetry Bus Driver Extraordinaire, asked that we write a poem on something (literally), this came to mine. As I said, it is not a poem, but it's the germ of one. It was percolating in my mind while I was in the shower one morning, and I had to get it down before it flew from my mind, as so many of my ideas seem to do. Achoo, and they're gone, floating around wherever lost poems go. So this is not a poem, but it's an idea for one, written with eyeliner before it flew away. Don't worry if you can't read it. It came to nothing and ended up being wiped into oblivion anyway.

You can find other poems written on objects such as bananas, rocks, coffee cups -- here.

  1. Always fascinating how not-a-poem becomes a poem.

  3. That's wonderful - I love the idea of all the scraps and snatches of poetry scribbled everywhere in whatever comes to hand ...

  4. I must lose a lot of stuff because I never, ever carry my eye liner with me.

  5. Brilliant, great that you had the eyeliner handy, such a promising birthplace for a poem... am sure it'll grow into a good un

  6. Sounds rather like "Kubla Khan," a poem begun but never finished.

I'm afraid I walk around sans eyeliner, too. You should see Walking Man when he wears it though. Lovely.

  7. I love this, Karen! And Mark's comment utterly cracked me up.

Pinning inspiration down, with whatever instrument comes handy. The porcelain reminds me of a canvas...and look! There are even brushes. :)

  8. It is so true that inspiration comes fleeting. Showers and driving on the road for some odd reason becomes spots where inspiration flies in.

  9. I've blown it up and up and up and still can't read it! Perhaps it's semi legibility is part of what makes it what it is.

  10. Jason - You can say that again. :-)

Jason - You can say that again. ;-) He, he!

Simon - I actually have scratchings everywhere, but for some reason, I took a picture of this one that day before I wiped it into nothingness. That's where most of my ideas end up anyway!

Walking Man - Hello! I didn't recognize you without your eyeliner! Nice to see you walkin' about.

Niamh - Actually, this one, like oh so many, came to naught. It was kind of neat, though, writing with that waxy pencil. The feel was smooth even if the words were not!

Shakespeare - Hello! Not exactly Kubla Khan. More like something written in disappearing ink. Going, going, gone! Oh, and I'll bet Mark looks cute every way.

Sarah - I actually wrote that one: Painting Again!

Quackster - I've lost too many ideas in both places. Is this common? They should make nets for them. We'd be capturing wayward verse all over the place!

Dominic - Truly? I can't read it either! At the time I knew what I was trying to remember. Now, it's gone, gone. "The water washes...something something...something something about landscape Disappears...something something...Crystal something something." See? Not worth deciphering!

  11. i can't really make it out either - but i kind of love that i can't, as i can relate - i have scraps of horrible chicken-scratch i wrote that i can barely make out. they're like little secrets with one's self that way. some never see the light of day, some grow as fast as i can write 'em down, and some just sit around, waiting to spark something months or years later.

though i must admit - my resources are not as cool. (and i like the reflection in the cup - reminds me of that backwards writing da vinci did - and mabe you're not sculpting david, but he had a lot of notebooks that sort of went nowhere too. hope!)

  13. Hi I had the same problme as Dominic, but then the setting of the poem made sense and along with a few of the words I could make out water, disappers it made sense to me visually I really liked the poetry of the photo :)

  14. At first, I wondered if you had a poem up and took it down...lol! I'm a little slow on the draw today (like most days). Then I clicked on the picture and tried to read it. That is a really cool idea.

BUT...there's your poem! A poem about writing a poem with eyeliner. Sneezing it away is another great idea.

  15. You always do write a poem on someone(s) with your poetry. It was about time you wrote on something. :)
