open letter to you who inherit the earth
Forgive me
though I know
what I do.
Forgive me
my footprint,
my trespass.
Birds of the air,
field of stunted grain,
forgive me
my time here.
Forgive me
the mask you wear,
the stream, the air.
Forgive me
the memory of trees.
Oh, my children,
find a way
to forgive me
your dead
each day.
Love the heartfelt emotion of your open letter 'plea.'
ReplyDeleteOh yes, yes - I need that forgiveness too. I'm taking the week off from work next week & one of the things I'm excited about is not inflicting my 80 miles of communiting per day on the planet (and my checkbook).
ReplyDeleteLove it Karen. But let them assign all blame to me that they do not waste time assigning it to themselves or continuing the useless non productive arguments. I do not need forgiveness I only need them to find a way forward for their grandchildren that allows the planet to heal.
ReplyDeleteWhat a strong poem, Karen. We have to find a way to turn it around and take care of the earth again. Heartfelt.
ReplyDeletebrilliant poem, don't we all need forgiveness for what we do to this planet we're meant to care for.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how we will know if we have received absolution. What shall be our penance?
ReplyDeleteAn Open Letter that I'm afraid I too will have to leave for my descendents :(
ReplyDeleteA powerful message delivered beautifully.
profound and deep. love the way you gently seek forgiveness for everything from your time here to how you describe even your footprint as a'trespass'. whew, quite a beauty, this one!
ReplyDeleteWe need forgiveness for what we have done to the earth..."Forgive me my footprint, my trespass." So powerful!
ReplyDeleteForgive me
ReplyDeletemy footprint,
my trespass
How very unfair and cruel for humankind to trespass onto earth's privacy. One as yet may not realize the potential threats. The Green Revolution should be supported. Nicely Karen!
Hank
So tragic. I do hope we can fix things so there's not so much to forgive.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderfully said. The first three lines are so strong and so true, drawing the reader into the poem.
